Travel Destinations

Each year the Aaftravel® writers and editorial team come up with a list of destinations travelers should consider visiting in the year ahead. Not necessarily "hot spots," these destinations are what we consider up and coming, often overlooked or underestimated-or simply alternatives to nearby overrun tourist traps. This year, the team at Frommer's reached out to readers as well and came up with a Top Destination list that includes a Reader Favourite selection.

Top Destinations of 2010 by Aaftravel's

"We recognize that it's difficult to whittle the world down to just a dozen or so places and that each annual list will inevitably exclude someplace our readers are eager to visit," said Aaftravel.com Editorial Director David Lytle.

"So, this year, we decided to give them the opportunity to nominate and then vote on the place most of them would like to visit in 2010. Everybody has an opinion, and we wanted Frommers.com readers to be able to quantify theirs.

1. *Reader Favourite: Paris

2. Santiago de Cuba, Cuba

3. Florida Panhandle Beaches, United States

4. Hawaii (the Big Island), United States

5. Salta Province, Argentina

6. Mexico City, Mexico

7. Melbourne, Australia

8. Hanoi, Vietnam

9. Kerala, India

10. Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

11. Tunisia

12. Copenhagen, Denmark

13. Isles of Scilly, England

After more than 1,200 readers nominated nearly 3,000 destinations around the world and then cast 3,500 ballots, Paris was chosen as the Reader Favourite. The remaining destinations were selected by Aaftravel's writers and staff as a mix of value picks, spots that are gearing up for a big event, alternative choices to nearby popular and overrun tourist sites, and destinations that are justifiably hyped and should be visited. The contest was sponsored by Viva Wyndham All-Inclusive Resorts, which has locations in the Dominican Republic, Mexico and the Bahamas.
